SoHo says Go Puppy Bowl V!

February 2, 2009

My favorite part of Super Bowl Sunday is the Puppy Bowl!  Puppy Bowl is an annual canine competition which features 54 puppies from shelters who play football at the Animal Planet Stadium.  (all are up for adoption on www.petfinder.com)

In case you didn’t know, the first Puppy Bowl aired in 2005 during Super Bowl Sunday.  The second Puppy Bowl, in 2006, introduced a new half time show – the Bissell Kitty Half Time Show – which has since become an annual tradition.  The show features adorable shelter kittens playing and having a blast in the Animal Planet Stadium. (it sure is better than most of the Half Time Show Acts during the actual Super Bowl…just my opinion)  This year Puppy Bowl V was kicked off by Pepper the Parrot who sang his own unique version of the National Anthem.  Interestingly enough, Pepper the Parrot was selected to sing the National Anthem in a similar process as American Idol.  I’m told that thousands of parrots from across the country filled arenas to audition – each week, parrots were sent flying home, one by one, with their dreams of some day singing at the Animal Planet Stadium….and this year Pepper was the winner.

If you haven’t watched Puppy Bowl V yet – you can still catch it on www.animalplanet.com.  It is exciting to watch through the “water bowl cam” and see who gets “puppy penalties” – my money is on the two bichon mixes!
